Cape Town: A horrific long-distance bus crash in South Africa’s Western Cape has claimed the lives of 16 people, including three children, and left 20 others seriously injured. The passenger vehicle, carrying 78 occupants from Cape Town to the Eastern Cape, overturned along the N1 highway near Touws River early Thursday morning.
The catastrophic accident occurred when the bus driver suddenly swerved to avoid an oncoming delivery vehicle, causing the bus to lose control and flip onto its side. Emergency responders rushed the injured passengers to a nearby hospital, while 43 others completely declined medical treatment.
Following the tragedy, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy demanded a preliminary forensic report within 48 hours. The fatal crash intensifies scrutiny on South Africa’s persistent road safety crisis, which accounts for thousands of highway fatalities annually due to chronic reckless driving, unroadworthy vehicles, and speeding.
