Drone strike near courthouse in central Sudan kills 12

Khartoum: A drone strike blamed on Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces killed 12 people outside a courthouse in the army-held town of Umm Rawaba on Tuesday. 

A medical source confirmed the fatalities following the strike in the central state of North Kordofan.

Witnesses stated that the drone struck a tree outside the building where numerous residents had gathered to complete legal and administrative procedures. The powerful explosion killed several victims immediately at the scene as bystanders rushed to assist survivors.

Umm Rawaba occupies a strategic route connecting central and western Sudan and remains under army control despite repeated attacks in the surrounding region. The Rapid Support Forces issued no immediate comment regarding the incident.

The assault highlights a broader, escalating wave of drone strikes deployed by both opposing sides since hostilities broke out between the military and paramilitary forces in April 2023.

Aid workers estimate the devastation from the ongoing civil war has killed more than 200,000 people, displaced millions, and fueled the world's worst hunger and displacement crises.
