Canada Strikes Back as Trade War With US Escalates

Ottawa: Canada has began imposing retaliatory tariffs of 15%, 25%, and 50% on US imports worth around C$27.6 billion ($20 billion), escalating an already tense trade battle with Washington.
The sanctions, which go into effect on Tuesday, will target hundreds of American products in industries like as steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, furniture, and electronics. Ottawa claims the tariffs are intended to equal US duties dollar for dollar.
The move follows the breakdown of recent US-Canada trade talks and comes as President Donald Trump has promised additional action against Canadian industry, including greater auto tariffs and pressure on aviation manufacturer Bombardier.
With no active trade talks now happening, Canadian businesses risk increased costs, interrupted supply chains, and weakened cross-border commerce, prompting concerns that the 18-month disagreement may become a long-term economic standoff.
