Nepal Flood Death Toll Rises as Rescuers Search Trapped Workers

Kathmandu: The death toll from Nepal's devastating floods and landslides has continued to increase as rescuers search damaged hydropower tunnels and remote villages for those who remain missing.
Rescue operations are focussing on numerous hydroelectric plants, where workers are believed to be trapped below after floodwaters and debris swept through the sites. The recovery effort has been difficult by closed tunnels, unstable terrain, and substantial infrastructural damage.
On August 26, a massive glacial and mountain collapsed near Nepal's border with China, causing torrents of water and debris to flow downstream. Houses, roads, bridges, and electrical lines were destroyed in the affected areas.
Nepalese authorities have sent emergency workers and foreign specialists to help with the search. Rescuers are utilising heavy machines and other equipment to clear rubble and reach locations that are still inaccessible.
The operation remains arduous, but the rescue of workers from underground tunnels has raised hopes that others may still be alive as teams continue to search.
