Addis Ababa: A violent security breach at Ethiopia's Tulu Kapi gold project resulted in numerous deaths, requiring the halting of mining operations, according to operator KEFI Gold and Copper.
The incident occurred on September 4 at a probable gold mine in the Oromia Region. The casualties included security guards, members of the local population, and at least one firm employee, however the exact number of deaths was not disclosed.
KEFI has halted development activity while it consults with Ethiopian authorities, community leaders, and security stakeholders on the conditions required for a safe resumption. The project, which began development in March, was planned to produce gold in 2028.
The identities of those responsible for the violence remain unknown. The Oromia region has seen ongoing insecurity, including an ethnic nationalist uprising.
