NATO Pushes to Boost Weapons Production Despite Higher Defence Spending

Brussels : NATO leaders meeting in Ankara next week will focus on expanding weapons production as the alliance seeks to turn record defence spending into stronger military capabilities.
Europe and Canada increased defence spending by about $90 billion last year, but NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the priority is to quickly convert funding into combat-ready equipment.
The drive follows Russia's war in Ukraine and recent US military operations against Iran, which exposed shortages in weapons stockpiles and production capacity. Analysts warn Europe could quickly run short of key munitions in a major conflict.
Leaders are expected to announce major defence industry deals at the summit, while the European Union continues efforts to increase production and deepen cooperation with Ukraine's fast-growing defence industry.
