Manama: Bahrain has formally urged the United Nations Security Council to hold Iran accountable following drone attacks targeting the kingdom, describing the incident as a serious violation of its sovereignty and a threat to regional security.
In a letter submitted to the Security Council, Bahrain's Permanent Mission to the United Nations condemned the attacks carried out in the early hours of June 27, saying they endangered civilians and violated international law and established international norms.
The kingdom said the attacks had occurred despite ongoing regional and international efforts to reduce tensions and accused Iran of undermining diplomatic initiatives aimed at restoring stability in the region.
Bahrain also argued that the incident violated commitments outlined in the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, signed on June 17, which included provisions related to ending military operations and respecting the sovereignty of regional states.
The letter further stated that the attacks challenged the international consensus reflected in UN Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026), which was introduced by Bahrain on behalf of Gulf Cooperation Council countries and Jordan and backed by 136 UN member states.
Reaffirming its right to defend its sovereignty and national security under international law, Bahrain called on the Security Council to enforce its resolutions and take action against those responsible for the attack.
The kingdom said peace and regional stability could not be achieved through threats or aggression and stressed that it remained committed to protecting its security and territorial integrity.
