US Says Washington and Tehran Have Agreed to Halt Further Attacks

Washington: The United States said on Sunday that Washington and Tehran had agreed to halt further attacks following a new round of military exchanges that threatened to undermine their fragile agreement aimed at ending the Middle East conflict. Iran had not publicly commented on the US statement.
A US official said both sides had agreed to stand down for now and allow the free movement of vessels through and around the Strait of Hormuz, while technical discussions on implementing the broader agreement would continue.
The latest tensions flared after the US military said it had struck Iranian targets in response to what it described as continued Iranian actions against commercial shipping. Iran later announced retaliatory strikes against US military positions in Kuwait and Bahrain, both of which condemned the attacks.
Despite the renewed exchanges, Washington said talks aimed at ending the conflict and stabilising the region were expected to continue. The US official did not confirm reports that negotiations could resume in Qatar this week.
Iran, meanwhile, warned that any attempts to alter the current shipping arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz could increase tensions. Tehran has sought a greater role in managing traffic through the strategic waterway since the outbreak of the conflict.
Separately, tensions remained high on Israel's northern border after Israel said it had destroyed a large Hezbollah tunnel network in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah accused Israel of violating the ceasefire and said it reserved the right to respond.
The latest exchanges have highlighted the continuing fragility of efforts to end the conflict, which has disrupted global energy supplies and heightened tensions across the Middle East.
