Seoul: South Korea's head coach Hong Myung-bo has resigned following the national team's sad group-stage loss from the FIFA World Cup, as President Lee Jae-myung apologised to the people and demanded a complete review into the team's failure.
South Korea had experienced three days of nervous anticipation in the hopes of advancing as one of the tournament's eight best third-place teams. However, they were eliminated from the World Cup before reaching the knockout stage due to poor results in other group matches.
President Lee expressed regret for the early exit, thanking the players, coaching staff, and supporters, and promising broad measures to strengthen South Korean football. He also asked authorities to look into the causes for the team's poor performance and offer ways to avoid similar mistakes in the future.
Hong, whose leadership had received widespread criticism throughout the competition, announced his resignation shortly after being eliminated. His retirement signals the start of a major shake-up in South Korean football, as officials work to restore public trust ahead of future international competitions.
