ROME: Thousands of scooter drivers are gathering in Rome as the legendary Vespa celebrates its 80th birthday with a massive celebration.
The iconic vehicle, cemented globally through cinema classics like ‘Roman Holiday,’ is marking the milestone with a four-day festival culminating in a grand parade through the Italian capital on Saturday.
More than 10,000 ‘Vespisti’ from across the globe have traveled to Rome to participate. The festivities began on Thursday with the opening of a ‘Vespa Village’ at the Foro Italico sports complex, drawing international fans who praise the scooter's premium design, unique status, and family-like global community.
First patented on April 23, 1946, by the Piaggio group, the scooter was named after the distinct ‘wasp’ sound of its engine. Italian political figures, including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, have praised the vehicle as a cherished international icon of style and a symbol of post-World War II industrial excellence.
Originally designed as an affordable means of transport leveraging aviation innovations, the scooter has evolved into a massive global phenomenon.
Piaggio executive chairman Matteo Colaninno noted that the brand is now on the verge of reaching 20 million total vehicles produced since its inception.
