Jakarta: Indonesian police arrested dozens of protesters after demonstrations against President Prabowo Subianto's policies turned violent in the city of Surabaya.

The protest, attended by around 100 people, was part of growing nationwide anger over recent fuel price hikes and the government's costly free meals programme. Some demonstrators threw objects at police and set fires on the streets, prompting officers to make arrests.

Rights groups said at least 24 people were detained and questioned overnight without being charged. Police said they took action after protesters became violent.

The unrest comes amid wider protests across Indonesia over rising living costs and criticism of government spending policies under President Prabowo.
