Brussels: Swedish Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari broke barriers Thursday by bringing her three-month-old son, Adam, to an EU ministerial meeting in Luxembourg. The 30-year-old minister arrived with the baby in a sling, marking what is believed to be the first time an infant has attended such a high-level bloc meeting.
Pourmokhtari used the opportunity to demonstrate that women do not have to choose between their careers and motherhood. She expressed happiness at the possibility of attending professional meetings while tending to her child, receiving support from colleagues like French minister Monique Barbut, who gifted the baby a onesie.
Spain’s Climate Minister Sara Aagesen lauded the act as the ‘best illustration’ of working to create a better planet for future generations. The event highlights ongoing challenges for working mothers, who often face obstacles regarding promotions and career advancement following childbirth.
This move follows other significant precedents, such as Jacinda Ardern bringing her daughter to the UN General Assembly in 2018. Additionally, the European Parliament has recently moved to allow proxy voting for new mothers.
