Biarritz: A section of cliff collapsed in the French seaside resort of Biarritz, killing one woman and left another diver missing, local authorities said Thursday, as rescue crews began their search.

The fall occurred at 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday near Miramar Beach, which was crowded with swimmers seeking shelter from the extreme heatwave. According to authorities, three local divers were at the base of the cliff when the landslip occurred.

Emergency responders found the death of one woman shortly before 11:00 p.m., while the search for the missing diver was stopped overnight and restarted on Thursday morning. A third diver escaped unharmed but was treated for shock.

According to locals, the collapsed cliff is beneath Biarritz's lighthouse and is only accessible from the sea. Officials have blocked off the area as a caution while enquiries into the cause of the fall continue.

A local association in charge of monitoring the cliffs said that the same stretch had collapsed in 2008 and 2018, highlighting ongoing concerns about coastal erosion.
