UN watchdog says Iran nuclear inspections 'going to happen'

Tokyo: The head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog said Wednesday that inspections at Iranian atomic sites were ‘going to happen,’ though he did not provide a specific timeline for the visits.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Rafael Grossi stated that the preliminary deal between Tehran and Washington to end the Middle East war ‘explicitly’ requires IAEA supervision of nuclear material facilities.

While Grossi noted that dates and locations are under discussion, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi pushed back, reiterating that no agreement on inspections has been reached. Iran continues to refuse access to specific nuclear sites that were bombed by US and Israeli forces in 2025, contradicting assertions by US President Donald Trump that Tehran had ‘fully and completely’ agreed to allow inspectors to return.

Uncertainty regarding Iran’s highly enriched uranium stockpiles has lingered since the US-Israeli bombardments in June 2025. Although Iran permitted limited visits to the Bushehr nuclear power plant earlier this month, it has blocked entry to the damaged facilities, citing domestic legislation passed after the 12-day war that originally suspended cooperation with the IAEA.
