7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Colombia

A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, August 10, causing buildings to collapse and leaving at least 22 people dead, according to authorities and local reports.

The earthquake was centered near San José del Palmar in the Chocó province and was felt across large parts of Colombia, including Bogotá. Pereira reported the highest number of fatalities, while deaths were also recorded in Manizales and Buenaventura.

Several cities reported significant structural damage. In Cali, more than two dozen structures collapsed, with some people reportedly trapped under rubble. Emergency and rescue teams were deployed to affected areas as authorities assessed the extent of the damage.

The earthquake was also felt in neighbouring countries, while authorities continued monitoring the situation for possible aftershocks.
