Trump Extends US Shipping Waiver Amid Iran Tensions

U.S. President Donald Trump has extended a waiver for another 90 days, allowing certain foreign vessels to transport oil and other commodities between US ports as the war involving Iran continues to disrupt global energy flows.

The latest waiver, which comes before the previous relief expires in mid-August, has a narrower focus on energy transportation, a White House official said.

White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said the extension would help ensure the military and key industries have continued access to critical resources. She said the waiver had contributed to increased domestic deliveries of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel.

The new measure also requires authorities to review the availability of US vessels before determining whether the waiver can apply to individual voyages.

Oil prices have risen sharply since US and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February triggered the conflict, while disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have further affected global energy supplies.

US gasoline prices have also increased, adding pressure on household budgets ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

Under the 1920 Jones Act, goods transported by sea between US ports must generally be carried on vessels that are built in the United States, owned by US interests and registered under the US flag.
