Australia, Vietnam Boost Military Ties Amid China Concerns

Sydney: Australia and Vietnam have agreed to boost military and defence cooperation, signalling deeper strategic coordination amid rising security concerns in the Indo-Pacific and China's growing regional influence.
The deal became public during Vietnamese President To Lam's visit to Australia, where he met with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The two sides agreed to boost defence exchanges, training, marine security collaboration, and information sharing.
The decision comes as Vietnam faces long-standing territorial issues with China in the South China Sea, while Australia has shifted its attention to regional stability, freedom of navigation, and international law.
Australia and Vietnam will further bolster collaboration in vital minerals, semiconductors, clean energy, and supply chains as part of measures to boost economic and strategic stability.
The growing alliance points out Australia's desire to strengthen ties with Southeast Asian countries, while Vietnam maintains strategic contacts with a number of major powers, including China.
