Beirut: Senior U.S. and Qatari officials met separately with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Sunday to discuss the ongoing Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon and to uphold the fragile ceasefire with Israel.
According to the Lebanese presidency, Aoun spoke on the phone with U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. The main topics of discussion included bolstering the ceasefire monitoring system, preventing further escalation, and advancing diplomatic efforts to stabilise the border.
Aoun underlined Lebanon's demand that Israel fully comply with the ceasefire agreement, halting military operations and retreating from Lebanese land. He also emphasised the need of international support for Lebanon's sovereignty and the responsibility of the Lebanese army in ensuring security.
The discussions occur as emotions remain high despite a peace deal, with numerous accusations of ceasefire violations and concerns that sustained fighting could damage broader regional diplomatic efforts, including ongoing US-Iran talks.
