China launches probe after media reports of contaminated diapers

BEIJING: China’s market regulator has launched an official investigation after media reports claimed that diapers from major brands, including Huggies, contained a toxic substance.
Beijing's market watchdog reported last week that products from Huggies, Babycare, and Bibabebe tested positive for formamide, an irritant known to cause rashes and dizziness.
In response to the reports, all three companies issued statements over the weekend asserting that third-party retesting found no traces of formamide in their products.
Huggies has specifically announced that it is pursuing legal action against what it terms ‘false, misleading and malicious’ information.
The State Administration for Market Regulation is now collaborating with national health authorities to conduct the probe. Child safety issues remain highly sensitive in China, particularly given the legacy of the 2008 contaminated milk powder scandal that sickened 300,000 children. Authorities have yet to provide a timeline for the investigation’s results.
