London: Former security minister Dan Jarvis has been named the United Kingdom's new Defence Minister following John Healey's resignation, Downing Street has confirmed.
Healey resigned following a conflict within the government over defence funding plans, resulting in a wider turmoil at the Ministry of Defence. Jarvis, who formerly served as Minister of State for Security and is a former Parachute Regiment officer, has taken over Britain's security ministry at a time when political pressure on military spending is growing.
The nomination comes amid increased scrutiny of the government's defence investment policy, as well as worries within the ruling party about whether present budget levels are sufficient to address security issues.
Jarvis is expected to take over immediate command of defence strategy and prepare the UK's position for upcoming international security and NATO negotiations.
