Mexico City: Mexico made a winning start in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating South Africa 2-0 in the tournament's first match at the crowded Estadio Azteca.
Over 80,000 fans cheered when Julián Quiñones gave the hosts an early lead in the ninth minute. Raúl Jiménez, the veteran striker, earned the victory in the second half with his first World Cup goal.
Three red cards were given during the highly competitive match. Mexico's captain César Montes was given a late red card in stoppage time, while South Africa's Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane were both sent off.
The win gives Mexico a solid start to their Group A campaign and marked their first victory in a World Cup opening match. South Africa's second group-stage match is against the Czech Republic, while Mexico's next match is against South Korea.
