Germany Announces $1.5 Billion Ukraine Aid Package Amid Russian Drone Attacks
Germany has announced a new support package worth more than €1.3 billion ($1.5 billion) for Ukraine as Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities intensify.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made the announcement during an unannounced visit to Kyiv on Sunday, where he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy amid repeated air raid sirens and explosions.
The package includes around €1 billion in military assistance, including long-range weapons, combat drones and satellite technology. Another €350 million will support repairs to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure ahead of winter.
Germany and Ukraine are also expanding cooperation on drone production, including systems designed to counter Russian jet-powered attack drones. The two countries signed 15 agreements and documents with a combined value of more than €8.5 billion, covering security cooperation, defence production, procurement and joint projects.
During the visit, Merz and Zelenskyy toured the damaged National Academy of Sciences building in Kyiv, which was struck during a recent Russian drone attack.
Zelenskyy also said Washington had proposed fresh talks involving Ukraine and Russia by the end of October, as diplomatic efforts continue alongside the intensifying attacks.
