SYDNEY: A 21-year-old French national faces negligent driving charges after crashing an SUV into the historic Archibald Fountain in downtown Sydney's Hyde Park while casually eating a McDonald’s meal.
The unusual incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday morning. According to New South Wales police, the driver reversed the vehicle onto the monument, leaving it wedged at a severe angle.
‘Half of it was sticking inside, and half of it was sticking out, with the driver still inside,’ Police Inspector Anderson Lessing reported.
When responding officers arrived at the scene, they found the driver entirely uninjured and unbothered, actively eating fast food inside the cabin. The man claimed he was delivering a food order when the crash happened. Authorities estimate the damage to the fountain at roughly A$15,000.
