Tokyo: Severe tropical storm Jangmi brought heavy rain and strong winds across large parts of Japan on Wednesday, prompting evacuation warnings for hundreds of thousands of people, disrupting transport services, and causing widespread flooding.
Authorities urged about 370,000 residents from the Tokyo region to western Japan to move to safer locations as rivers swelled and the risk of landslides increased. Officials warned that unstable ground could remain dangerous even after rainfall eased.
The storm flooded roads, toppled trees, triggered landslides, and caused around 60,000 power outages, according to government officials. Schools were closed in some areas, while train services faced delays and cancellations as many commuters stayed home.
Air travel was also heavily affected. Japan's two largest airlines canceled more than 600 flights, including dozens of international services, leaving passengers stranded and disrupting travel plans.
Although the storm began moving away from Japan toward the Pacific Ocean later in the day, authorities continued to urge caution as flood risks and landslide threats remained in several regions.
At least 15 people were reported injured as the storm swept through southern parts of the country earlier this week.
