Illegal Mosque Inaugurated by Pakistani Envoy Faces Demolition in Japan

KAWAGOE: A newly constructed mosque in Japan's Kawagoe City faces a formal municipal demolition order after local authorities declared it was built illegally without required development permits. The decision has sparked a diplomatic controversy because Pakistan's Ambassador to Japan, Abdul Hameed, attended the grand opening ceremony on April 3.

Municipal officials confirmed the mosque was constructed in an urbanization control zone, where development is strictly restricted under Japan's City Planning Act. Local planners stated that builders ignored multiple warnings to halt construction and repeatedly claimed they did not understand Japanese.

Amid growing public backlash and demands for demolition, the Pakistani Embassy in Tokyo issued a statement distancing itself from the project. The embassy clarified that the ambassador only attended after being assured all permits were secured. It strongly urged Pakistani nationals residing in Japan to strictly obey local planning regulations and cooperate with municipal authorities.
