PM Says Henry Nowak Arrest Footage ‘Deeply Disturbing’

London: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated that recently released police bodycam video showing 18 years old student Henry Nowak being handcuffed while critically injured raises ‘serious questions’ about police conduct and should be thoroughly investigated. Starmer said that he felt ‘sick’ after watching the video, which has sparked massive public anger across the UK.
Hampshire Police released video footage following the conviction of Nowak's killer, which showed the teenager repeatedly telling officers he had been stabbed and was struggling to breathe. Officers first considered him as a suspect when his attacker, Vickrum Digwa, reported that he had been racially harassed and beaten. Nowak was handcuffed while lying on the ground and eventually died of his injuries.
Digwa found guilty of murder and given a life imprisonment with a minimum of 21 years in jail. The court was informed that his accusations against Nowak were false and meant to mislead the responding officers. Police judgement has come under increased scrutiny as a consequence of the case, and complaints have been made that officers did not adequately evaluate the circumstances prior to detaining the victim.
The officers' acts are being looked at by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). Shabana Mahmood, the Home Secretary, told Parliament that the video was ‘disturbing and tragic’ and promised to fully support an objective and open investigation. While the inquiry is ongoing, officials have also cautioned against false information and threats against police officers.
The release of the recording triggered protests in Southampton and renewed debate about policing practices, race relations, and accountability. While some demonstrations were peaceful, disputes between demonstrators and police were reported as public anger with the handling of the case intensified.
