Tokyo: Tropical Storm Jangmi swept across southwestern Japan on Tuesday, injuring at least nine people, cutting power to tens of thousands of homes and disrupting air travel as authorities warned of flooding, landslides and dangerous weather conditions.
The storm, which was downgraded from a typhoon, moved north after battering Okinawa and nearby islands with strong winds and heavy rain. More than 47,000 households lost electricity across Okinawa and the Kagoshima region, while hundreds of flights were cancelled, causing widespread travel disruptions.
Officials said the injuries were reported mainly in Okinawa, where strong winds toppled trees, blew debris onto roads and caused several accidents. Authorities urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert as the storm continued its path toward mainland Japan.
In Kyushu, evacuation advisories were issued for large numbers of residents as forecasters warned that torrential rainfall could trigger flooding, overflowing rivers and landslides. Weather officials said severe conditions could spread to other parts of western and eastern Japan in the coming days.
Jangmi is expected to continue moving northeast, bringing further heavy rain and strong winds before gradually weakening. Authorities have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and take precautions against possible flooding and storm damage.
