Euphrates Floods Devastate Farms in Eastern Syria

Deir Ezzor, Syria: Severe flooding along the Euphrates River has destroyed crops, damaged homes and disrupted daily life in eastern Syria, leaving many farmers facing heavy financial losses and an uncertain future.
Authorities say unusually high water levels, driven by heavy rainfall and increased flows from Turkey, caused the river to overflow across parts of the Deir Ezzor and Raqqa provinces. Thousands of acres of farmland were inundated, while bridges, crossings and water pumping stations were damaged or forced out of service.
For many residents, agriculture is the main source of income, and the flooding has wiped out wheat and other crops just as farmers were expecting to harvest them. Some farmers said they received little warning before the water surged, leaving them unable to protect their land and equipment.
The Syrian government has described the rise in water levels as exceptional and has taken emergency measures, including operating floodgates at the Euphrates Dam and reinforcing protective barriers in vulnerable areas. Rescue teams have also been deployed to assist stranded residents.
The flooding, considered among the worst in decades, has added to the hardships faced by communities already struggling with years of conflict and economic difficulties. Farmers are now calling for compensation and government support as they assess the damage and prepare for a potentially difficult season ahead.
