SEOUL: The president of South Korea’s football association, Chung Mong-gyu, announced on Friday that he will resign after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Facing immense public backlash, the 65-year-old official cited his own ‘lack of virtue’ as the primary reason for stepping down, ending a highly controversial 13-year tenure at the helm of national football.

Chung's leadership has been heavily criticized following a series of high-profile administration scandals. Most notably, the Korea Football Association (KFA) chief faced severe public fury after attempting to pardon former players who were banned for life over match-fixing.

Additionally, fans condemned Chung for bypassing standard protocols to hire head coach Jurgen Klinsmann in 2023, who was sacked after just one disastrous year in charge.

Despite securing a fourth presidential term last year with an 85.6 percent approval rating, Chung stated that supporting the national team in the upcoming tournament will be his final responsibility. He plans to formally step down immediately following the World Cup final on July 19.
