Kyiv: A cargo ship travelling from Ukraine’s Odesa region to Turkey was hit by a Russian drone in the Black Sea, Ukrainian authorities said Friday, in the latest escalation affecting civilian shipping routes in the region.
Ukraine’s Navy said the Vanuatu-flagged vessel, owned by a Turkish company, was struck while sailing along a Black Sea export corridor. The attack caused a fire onboard and injured two crew members, who were later evacuated for medical treatment.
Emergency teams and naval units later extinguished the blaze.
The strike came hours after separate drone attacks reportedly targeted three Russia-linked oil tankers near Turkey’s northern coast. Ukrainian intelligence has previously identified the vessels as part of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” used to bypass Western sanctions on oil exports.
The incidents have raised fresh concerns over security in the Black Sea, a critical route for global trade and energy shipments amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
