Singapore: Rising tensions involving China, Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific are dominating discussions at Asia’s top security summit in Singapore, where global defence leaders are also expected to address the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.
Vietnamese leader To Lam opened the Shangri-La Dialogue on Friday, while U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is set to outline the Trump administration’s Indo-Pacific strategy on Saturday.
The summit comes amid growing concerns over China’s military expansion and uncertainty about U.S. commitments in the region, especially regarding Taiwan.
Recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump after meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping have also raised questions over Washington’s future support for Taiwan.
The conference is also expected to focus on Russia’s war in Ukraine and tensions in the Middle East, including disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz that have affected global oil markets.
