US Opens Criminal Probe Into E. Jean Carroll Over Alleged Perjury Claims

Washington DC: The Trump administration has launched a criminal investigation into writer E. Jean Carroll over allegations that she may have committed perjury during testimony in her civil lawsuits against President Donald Trump.
According to reports by The New York Times and CNN, federal prosecutors are examining whether Carroll misled the court in a 2022 deposition when she said she had not received outside financial support for her legal expenses.
The inquiry focuses on later disclosures that a nonprofit funded by billionaire LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman had helped cover some of her legal fees. Trump’s legal team argued that this contradicted her earlier testimony and questioned her credibility.
Carroll’s lawyers have said she was not involved with the nonprofit and had no direct contact with those managing the funding. A judge previously allowed Trump’s legal team to conduct a second deposition on the issue, but an appeals court later dismissed claims that Carroll had lied under oath.
Carroll has brought multiple civil cases against Trump, including allegations of sexual abuse and defamation. In earlier rulings, juries found Trump liable and awarded Carroll millions of dollars in damages, decisions that Trump has appealed.
The reported investigation has also raised concerns among critics who say it reflects a broader pattern of federal authorities targeting political opponents, though no charges have been filed and the Justice Department has not made any official statement.
Neither the Justice Department nor Carroll’s legal representatives have commented publicly on the reported probe.
