California chemical tank scare eases as possible crack relieves pressure

New York: Emergency crews in Southern California are monitoring a hot chemical tank and believe a possible break in the container is relieving internal pressure, potentially reducing the risk of an explosion.

The tank, located inside GKN Aerospace's Garden Grove site, can hold up to 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate, a highly volatile chemical used in plastics manufacture. Officials have warned that the tank might break, release poisonous chemicals, or spark a bigger crisis involving other storage tanks.

According to Orange County fire authorities, after an overnight check, specialists discovered a possible crack in the tank. While authorities are still determining if the crack is reducing pressure, they describe the finding as positive and think it may eventually improve efforts to safely remove the chemical.

The incident sparked evacuation orders for tens of thousands of residences, prompting Orange County Mayor Gavin Newsom to issue a state of emergency. Firefighters continue to cool the tank and plan containment procedures in case of a leak. So far, no harmful chemical releases have been found through air-quality monitoring.

According to EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, the most likely outcome is a smaller volume release that local authorities can manage and neutralise.
