Port of Spain: Authorities in Trinidad and Tobago have grounded a Ukrainian-operated cargo aircraft at Piarco International Airport after discovering an undeclared and highly volatile shipment of explosives on board.
The Antonov An-12 aircraft, which arrived in the twin-island Caribbean nation on Friday, May 15, 2026, was immediately detained by airport security and customs officials during a routine cargo manifest inspection.
The security operation began when discrepancies were flagged in the aircraft's shipping documentation, which listed the cargo as standard commercial hardware. Upon a physical inspection of the fuselage, security personnel uncovered a substantial cache of industrial-grade explosives and detonators that had not been cleared by local aviation authorities.
In response, national security forces established a strict cordon around the aircraft, isolating it on a remote tarmac runway to mitigate public safety risks while a joint task force conducted a thorough sweep of the plane.
According to preliminary flight logs, the cargo flight originated in Eastern Europe and was scheduled to make multiple refueling stops across the Americas before reaching its final, undisclosed destination. Local intelligence agencies are currently interrogating the Ukrainian flight crew to determine the origin, intended recipient, and purpose of the unauthorized ordnance.
While government officials have not yet confirmed any links to illicit arms trafficking networks, Trinidad and Tobago’s Ministry of National Security stated that the aircraft will remain grounded indefinitely pending a full international aviation safety probe.
