Syria names new central bank governor

DAMASCUS:  Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa appointed Abdul Hamid Raslan as the country’s new central bank governor on Friday, marking the latest high-profile change in a widening administrative shakeup.

Raslan, a veteran banker and former director-general of the Syrian Development Fund, directly replaces Abdul Qadir al-Hasriya, who has been reassigned to serve as Syria's new ambassador to Canada.

The transition follows a massive, unexplained government overhaul enacted by President Sharaa last week, which saw the replacement of multiple regional governors, two cabinet ministers, and the presidential secretary-general. Outgoing governor Hasriya, who took office in April 2025 following the fall of the Assad regime, famously spearheaded Syria's recent currency reform by removing two zeros from newly printed banknotes to stabilize domestic transactions.

The newly appointed Raslan now faces the monumental task of rebuilding trust in the national currency and reintegrating Syria's deeply isolated banking sector back into the global financial network.
