MOSCOW:Russian President Vladimir Putin has lauded the successful test-firing of the RS-28 Sarmat, an intercontinental ballistic missile he described as the world's most powerful, marking a significant escalation in Moscow's nuclear modernization efforts.
The test launch, conducted on Tuesday, May 12, from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome, involved the heavy ICBM hitting a designated target on the Kamchatka Peninsula.
Putin declared that the Sarmat, known in the West as ‘Satan II,’ possesses no equivalent and is designed to penetrate any prospective missile defense systems with its suborbital flight capabilities.
This latest demonstration of military strength follows Putin's recent claims that the conflict in Ukraine is nearing its end, yet he continues to upgrade Russia’s nuclear triad to maintain ‘strategic parity; with the West.
The Russian leader confirmed that the Sarmat system will enter active combat service by the end of 2026, replacing aging Soviet-era Voyevoda missiles. With the expiration of the New START nuclear pact earlier this year, this test serves as a stark reminder of the intensifying global arms race.
