LONDON: Medical experts have proposed a significant name change for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), rebranding it as Polycystic Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS). This shift is not just cosmetic; it is designed to more accurately reflect the systemic nature of the condition, which affects much more than just reproductive health.
For decades, the name "PCOS" has led to misconceptions, with many believing the condition only involves ovarian cysts. In reality, the syndrome is deeply tied to insulin resistance, weight management, and long-term metabolic risks like Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
By adding "Metabolic" to the name, doctors hope to shift the focus toward holistic treatment that addresses these underlying health factors. Advocates believe this rebrand will lead to earlier interventions and better insurance coverage for metabolic treatments, ensuring that millions of women receive care for the full spectrum of their symptoms rather than just their fertility.
