Washington DC: Preliminary survey work has officially commenced for the United States Triumphal Arch, a massive monument proposed for Washington, D.C., to honor America’s 250th anniversary in 2026.

Field crews were spotted on Monday, conducting soil testing and land measurements at Memorial Circle, located between the Arlington Memorial Bridge and Arlington National Cemetery. The project has sparked significant legal and public debate due to its unprecedented scale and placement within the capital's historic landscape.

The proposed neoclassical structure is designed to stand 250 feet tall, making it more than twice the height of the Lincoln Memorial. The design features a gold-winged Lady Liberty at its peak, four gilded lions at the base, and the inscriptions ‘One Nation Under God’ and ‘Liberty and Justice for All’ in gold lettering. Each foot of the arch's height is intended to represent one year of American independence since 1776.

Despite receiving conceptual approval from the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, the project faces a federal lawsuit from a coalition of Vietnam War veterans and historians.

Opponents argue that the arch would disrupt the solemn sightline between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington House, potentially desecrating the nearby military cemetery.

While critics have labeled the structure a ‘vanity project,’ supporters view it as a powerful tribute to the enduring triumph of the American spirit.

The commencement of survey work signals that the administration is moving forward with construction despite these ongoing legal challenges.
