ADFD to Launch First Satellite Capacity in Q4 2026, Boosting UAE’s Space and Development Capabilities

Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has announced plans to launch its first dedicated satellite capacity in the fourth quarter of 2026, marking a major step in integrating space-based technologies into development finance.

The announcement, made on the sidelines of Make it in the Emirates 2026, positions ADFD among the first global development institutions to leverage satellite capabilities for monitoring and implementing international projects. The initiative is being delivered in partnership with Orbitworks.

The upcoming launch builds on an agreement signed earlier this year during the World Governments Summit, through which ADFD secured dedicated satellite capacity—becoming the first development fund globally to adopt such an approach.

H.E. Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of ADFD, said the move represents a transformative step in how the fund oversees development impact, enabling greater precision, transparency, and efficiency in project monitoring while reinforcing the UAE’s leadership in advanced industries and space technologies.

Dr. Hamdullah Mohib noted that the milestone reflects a shift from agreement to execution, introducing a more data-driven and accountable model for development finance.

As part of the collaboration, ADFD will utilise the Altair constellation—comprising 10 AI-enabled, multi-sensor satellites assembled in Abu Dhabi. The constellation is designed to deliver high-resolution Earth observation data, supporting real-time monitoring of infrastructure, environmental conditions, and project progress across multiple countries.

The integration of satellite technology will allow ADFD to independently track project execution, verify compliance, and assess development impact with greater accuracy. The system will also provide access to secure digital mission control platforms and advanced imaging capabilities, strengthening oversight of its global portfolio.

Once operational, the Altair constellation will offer continuous optical imaging, reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to advancing space-enabled solutions and localising high-tech manufacturing. The initiative also aligns with national efforts to enhance innovation, transparency, and measurable outcomes in development projects worldwide.
