Brussels : A Belgian driver has gone on trial on murder charges over a 2022 car crash that killed seven people and injured dozens during a carnival event, in a case that has drawn national attention.

The incident took place in March 2022 in the village of Strepy-Bracquegnies, where a vehicle drove into a crowd of people taking part in early morning carnival celebrations. The crash left multiple victims dead and several others seriously injured, prompting widespread shock across Belgium.

Prosecutors have argued that the driver’s actions went beyond negligence, accusing him of deliberate or extremely reckless behaviour that led to the fatalities. This forms the basis of the murder charges, which carry significantly harsher penalties than manslaughter.

The defence, however, is expected to challenge that claim, maintaining that there was no intent to kill and that the crash was not a deliberate act. The court will examine evidence including the driver’s speed, state of mind, and actions leading up to the incident.

Authorities had earlier ruled out terrorism in the case, focusing instead on road safety violations and driver conduct. However, the severity of the crash and the number of casualties led prosecutors to pursue more serious charges.

Families of the victims are seeking accountability as the trial begins, hoping the proceedings will clarify what led to the tragedy and ensure justice for those affected.

The case is being closely watched, as its outcome could influence how similar incidents involving mass casualties caused by drivers are prosecuted in Belgium.
