Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on Sunday launched primary tunnelling works for the Dubai Metro Blue Line, a major expansion of the emirate’s rail network costing more than AED 20.5 billion ($5.5 billion), state media said.
The 30-kilometre line will include 14 stations — three interchange, seven elevated and four underground — and is designed to serve nine key districts with an estimated population of around one million under the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan.
The route comprises a 15.5- km underground section and 14.5 km above ground.
Sheikh Mohammed also reviewed proposed interior designs for future stations and was briefed on construction progress during a site visit at International City 1 Station, according to officials.
He said investment in transport infrastructure was “an investment in the future” and a central pillar in strengthening Dubai’s global competitiveness, adding that the project reflects an integrated vision for a more connected and sustainable city.
“Our projects in Dubai are delivered to meet the highest international standards, guided by clear plans, precise timelines, and national talent capable of turning vision into tangible achievements,” he said, noting that 180 railway experts and engineers are overseeing delivery.
Senior officials, including Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, attended the ceremony, alongside Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum and Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Authorities said the project is currently 20% complete, with more than 10,000 workers deployed and over 500 engineers supervising works under Emirati leadership. More than 13 million work hours have been completed without lost-time injuries.
