Australia FM says China agrees to collaborate on jet fuel exports

Canberra: Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has confirmed that China has agreed to facilitate the export of jet fuel to help ease significant supply disruptions. This collaboration aims to address the energy crisis across the Asia-Pacific region caused by ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Recent tensions and the closure of key maritime trade routes have caused global fuel prices to soar, disproportionately affecting refineries in the Indo-Pacific.

While China previously paused exports to protect its domestic supplies, major state-owned companies are now expected to resume fuel shipments as early as next month.

During high-level talks in Beijing, Australian officials emphasised the need for trade reciprocity. They argued that Australia’s steady supply of raw materials to China should be matched by a reliable flow of essential refined products, such as gasoline and kerosene, back to Australia.

The move is being viewed as a significant first step in stabilising the bilateral trading relationship between the two nations. In addition to energy security, the discussions also touched upon broader areas of difference, including human rights, regional security, and foreign interference.
