New Delhi: In a shocking incident in eastern India, a man from a tribal community in Odisha resorted to extreme measures after a bureaucratic dispute. Jitu Munda reportedly exhumed his sister's body and carried it into an Indian Overseas Bank branch to prove her passing.
The grisly scene unfolded on Monday after bank staff refused to grant Munda access to his deceased sister’s account without a formal death certificate. Frustrated by the denial, Munda returned to the branch with the plastic-wrapped remains slung over his shoulder, a sight captured by local television networks.
While the bank described the event as ‘highly distressing,’ they attributed the incident to a ‘lack of awareness’ regarding legal procedures.
Although birth and death registration is mandatory in India, documentation gaps remain common in rural areas. The bank has pledged to settle the claim once the required certificate is provided.
