Sexual violence in Sudan triggers mental health crisis: UN

Khartoum: The reported surge in systematic sexual violence in Sudan has triggered a catastrophic mental health crisis, with cases of women and girls requiring specialized support quadrupling since 2023.
Human rights organisations describe these assaults as a ‘blueprint of war’ used by armed groups to terrorize and control civilian populations. Survivors face immense psychological trauma, including suicidal ideation and social isolation, compounded by a healthcare system on the verge of collapse.
The emergency is exacerbated by a severe lack of international funding and the persistent stigma surrounding sexual violence, which prevents many from seeking life-saving care.
While local women-led groups remain on the front lines providing psychosocial aid, UN officials emphasise that without dismantling the culture of impunity and securing comprehensive mental health resources, the long-term stability of the region remains under threat.
