Berlin: Germany has launched a new recycling plant for rare earth magnets, aiming to reduce Europe’s dependence on China for critical materials used in modern technologies.

The facility, located in Pforzheim and operated by startup HyProMag, will recycle and produce magnets used in products such as electric vehicles, wind turbines and electronics. The plant is expected to produce up to 750 tonnes annually by 2028.

The project is part of a broader European push to secure supplies of key raw materials. The European Union has set a target to meet 25% of its demand for such materials through recycling by 2030.

Currently, Europe relies heavily on China, which dominates the global rare earth market and has recently tightened export controls, raising concerns about supply chain disruptions.

Officials say the new plant marks an important step toward building a more secure and sustainable supply of these essential materials as demand continues to grow.
