Istanbul: Dozens of lignite miners in Turkey were detained after arriving in Ankara following a nine-day protest march from Eskişehir province, demanding unpaid wages and redundancy payments from their employer, Doruk Mining. The workers staged a sit-in outside the energy ministry, where several wrote messages on their bare skin highlighting their hunger and financial distress.

According to the Bagimsiz Maden-Is miners’ union, around 110 colleagues were arrested after the group sought to meet officials but received no response. Union leaders accused authorities of ignoring workers’ grievances, while the energy ministry declined to comment on the incident. The protest reflects growing labour tensions over unpaid wages and job security in the mining sector.
