EU and NATO Push to Boost Defence Production Amid Uncertainty Over US Commitment

Brussels: The European Union and NATO have discussed plans to increase weapons production and strengthen Europe’s defence industry amid growing uncertainty over the United States’ long-term commitment to the transatlantic alliance.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Europe must invest more, produce more, and speed up defence manufacturing after meeting NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
The talks come as European countries try to strengthen their militaries due to the ongoing war in Ukraine and concerns over shifting US policy under Donald Trump.
There are also worries in Europe about whether Washington will continue to fully support NATO, especially after political tensions linked to global conflicts.
NATO members have already agreed to raise defence spending targets, but officials say Europe’s defence industry is still struggling to meet demand.
Rutte said stronger European defence capability would also strengthen NATO, stressing closer cooperation between the EU and the alliance.
Officials say improving industrial capacity and supporting Ukraine will be key topics at the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara, as Europe moves toward taking greater responsibility for its own security.
