Nizar Amedi assumes duty as Iraq’s new president

Nizar Amedi has officially assumed duty as Iraq’s new president after parliament elected him, marking the end of a prolonged political stalemate that had delayed government formation.

Amedi, nominated by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, secured a decisive victory in the parliamentary vote and has now taken up office as the country’s sixth head of state since 2003.

In his initial remarks, he pledged to work with all branches of government and prioritise national unity under an “Iraq First” approach, while acknowledging the country's significant challenges.
