Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang today, to strengthen the ‘traditional friendship’ between the two nations. This high-level meeting, the first by a Chinese Foreign Minister in seven years aims to deepen strategic ties as both countries navigate a rapidly changing global landscape.

During the talks, Wang Yi called for closer coordination on international and regional affairs to protect the security and sovereignty of both states. This push for unity coincides with the 65th anniversary of the China-DPRK Treaty of Friendship, highlighting a long-standing alliance that remains central to regional stability.

The engagement also follows the recent restoration of vital transport links, including Air China flights and passenger rail services, signaling a full reopening of relations after years of pandemic-related restrictions.

As North Korea manages its complex diplomatic ties with other world powers, this meeting reaffirms China’s role as its most critical economic and political partner. By emphasizing ‘practical cooperation’ and increased high-level exchanges, both leaders have signaled a new chapter in their partnership, ensuring that their strategic interests remain aligned.
