In Pakistan's mediation to end Mideast war, China may hold the key

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has intensified its diplomatic efforts to mediate an end to the escalating Middle East conflict, with Islamabad positioning itself as a vital bridge between regional powers.
As a nation with deep historical ties to both Saudi Arabia and Iran, Pakistan is leveraging its unique position to advocate for a de-escalation of hostilities that have increasingly threatened global oil markets and regional stability.
However, analysts suggest that China remains the ultimate catalyst for any successful peace deal. Beijing’s growing influence in the region, solidified by its previous role in brokering the 2023 Saudi-Iran rapprochement, provides the necessary economic and political weight to back Pakistan’s mediation. Currently, both nations are reportedly coordinating a high-level summit in Islamabad, aimed at securing a ceasefire and establishing a corridor for humanitarian aid.
The success of this dual-track diplomacy hinges on balancing Western interests with the strategic goals of the Global South. While Pakistan provides the diplomatic groundwork and cultural familiarity, China’s ‘key’ lies in offering long-term infrastructure and trade guarantees that could incentivize all parties to remain at the negotiating table.
